The Scope Festival of Showjumping in Staffordshire was the venue of the very competitive EquestrianClearance.com sponsored British Showjumping Senior Newcomers Masters on Monday.
In order to be competing at this prestigious event, horse and rider combinations must have jumped four double clear rounds (meaning gaining no faults in the first round or in the jump off) in the first round classes. This qualifies them for the second round competitions, in which they must finish in the top five to obtain a qualifying ticket for the ever popular Scope Showjumping Festival.
The event held at the Stafford County Showground was the last chance for combinations to qualify for a spot in the much sought after EquestrianClearance.com Senior Newcomers Championship at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), to be held in October at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham.
Thirteen successful combinations jumped clear in the first round and progressed through to the jump off of the EquestrianClearance.com Newcomers Masters.
Taking the win was twenty-four-year-old Danielle Jolliffe, a PE teacher based in Manchester, who rode her own seven-year-old stallion Explosief van de Heffinck to a clear round in the jump off in an unbeatable time of 33.79 seconds.
However, as Danielle had already qualified for the Final Championship at HOYS, the first qualifying ticket was passed down to Nigel Coupe who finished in second place with a very respectable jump off time of 36.36 seconds. First to go in the jump off, Nigel, riding Susan Simmons’ eight-year-old bay gelding Golvers Hill, had managed to hold onto the lead right up until second to last to go Danielle.
In third place and taking the second ticket to HOYS was Somerset-based rider Harriet Nuttall, riding her father Rupert Nuttall’s gelding A Touch Imperious. Harriet and the seven-year-old jumped clear through both rounds and finished the jump off in 37.17 seconds, less than a second behind Nigel Coupe.
Further clear rounds were achieved in the jump off by fourth-placed Sharon Quigley, riding A Adernie, Daniel Baker riding Frits II finished in fifth place, and Ross Hill riding W Tonix Hero, who achieved in sixth place.
The team at leading online retailer EquestrianClearance.com is very excited to be sponsoring this important stepping stone for riders and horses moving up the ranks, and look forward to seeing riders compete in what is sure to be an exciting final at Horse of the Year Show.
